Despite an opposing argument from the Secretary of Education’s Commission on the Future of Higher Education, the movement towards a common standardized measurement of college performance still continues. Here in the United States since this summer, there have been several colleges and universities working towards a common website, planned to display a standardized system of providing school statistics to students.

Though not shocking, the results of a study performed by the Educause Center for Applied Research shows that students are using technology more fluently than ever. However, the report did reveal some insightful findings about just how that technological fluency can be used to enhance the student learning experience.

In the 2005-6 school year, fees for public universities rose faster than tuition at over half of the country’s state-funded schools. The skyrocketing surcharges are due to legislatures that are not keen on increasing tuition, but also not adequately funding schools.

Due to pending legislation that would prohibit loan companies from using incentives to sway schools towards working with them, some organizations are getting out now, while they still can do so safely.

In a recent American Council on Education study, results showed one out of five undergraduates eligible for federal loans did not apply for that form of aid. Instead, they borrowed private loans, and ultimately will pay higher, unfixed interest rates.

In Massachusetts, the state licensing exam required for public education is both facing, and creating, major obstacles for diversity in education. The writing portion of the test is now failed by 52 percent of Hispanic candidates, and failed by 54 percent of African American candidates.
